With the 128-mile Schuylkill River as its spine, our Schuylkill River National and State Heritage Area is alive with a remarkable diversity of historic, recreational and cultural attractions.

Steeped in History

Along “the Revolutionary River,” visitors can shadow the birth of our nation from the cobblestone streets and fabled landmarks of old Philadelphia to the huts and hollows of Valley Forge. Upstream you’ll find a wealth of historic places, quaint river towns, abundant parks and access points to the river and trails, and year-round festivals and activities. There’s always something new to discover.

Arts & Culture

The cultural offerings in the Schuylkill River Heritage Area are almost immeasurable. World class art museums, public art, cultural centers and performing arts venues are around almost every turn.

Biking

Whether your preference is a rail-trail with a gentle grade, or rolling hills and picturesque valleys, the Heritage Area has roads and trails that provide wonderful bicycling experiences.

Birding

The Schuylkill River Heritage Area is home to a vast number of bird species, both native and migratory. There are numerous sites and facilities where you can view and learn about birds. The Heritage Area is especially noted for its location along the Kittatiny Flyway, one of the nation's most significant migratory bird routes.

Camping

For those who want to commune with nature and spend a night or two out of doors, there are plenty of camping facilities throughout the Schuylkill River Heritage Area. In this section you'll find information about where you camp, camping safety and ethics, and resources you can contact for further information.

Driving & Walking Tours

Many communities throughout the Heritage Area have developed walking and driving tours to help share their unique stories. A variety of self-guided tour brochures are available, allowing visitors to discover the rich heritage of the region simply by driving through the countryside or walking through some of the region's historic downtowns.

Festivals & Fairs

Often the best way to really experience a place is to get to know its people. County fairs, church festivals, and community block parties are among the best ways to get some insight into the traditions and customs of a community. The Schuylkill River Heritage Area boasts dozens of fairs and festivals during every season of the year.

Geocaching

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game that involves searching for hidden geocaches, which are often old ammo boxes, waterproof plastic containers, or small camouflaged containers. There are hundreds of geocaches along and near the Schuylkill River Trail and in interesting locations throughout the Schuylkill River Heritage Area.

Hiking

The Schuylkill River Heritage Area is criss-crossed by a network of trails that connect parks, gardens, and neighborhoods with each other and their environment. Those seeking to get out and walk will find ample opportunities to stretch their legs in all parts of the Heritage Area.

Horseback Riding

Equestrians will find plenty of opportunities to mount their steed and head out on the trail throughout the Schuylkill River Heritage Area. There are several bridle and horse-friendly trails through regional parks and wonderful stables, rings, and riding facilities in many parts of the Heritage Area.

Kid Friendly

Visitors to the Heritage Area who are traveling with children will take heart in knowing that many of the region's attractions offer programs and facilities especially for kids. The Schuylkill River Heritage Area boasts several world-class zoos, gardens, parks, and museums that will excite both kids and adults.

Paddling

Lakes, streams, and of course the river afford kayakers, canoeists, and recreational boaters an abundance of publicly accessible facilities in all parts of the Schuylkill River Heritage Area. In this section you'll find information about where you can paddle legally and safely, important safety and access information for river paddlers, water level and quality in the river, resources for further information, and clubs and organizations you can join.

Picnicking

Enjoying a meal outdoors on a warm summer afternoon can be an incredibly relaxing experience. But you might also want to get your entire family together for a BBQ at one of the region's many picnic groves or State Parks. No matter the type of meal you're planning to enjoy or the company with which you will share it, there are plenty of opportunities for you to dine outdoors.

Running & Jogging

Runners and joggers will find a variety trails, tracks, and events to allow them to stretch their legs throughout the Heritage Area. The area is criss-crossed by a network of paved and gravel trails including the Schuylkill River Trail. The Heritage Area also plays host to a number of 5Ks and 10Ks, marathons, and benefit walks throughout the year. Many of the region's towns provide a backdrop for daily exercise or a quiet stroll.
