Research shows that people who paddle a river are often inspired to protect it. The sojourn encourages river recreation and has proven success in building region-wide awareness about the value of the Schuylkill River, which provides drinking water for over 1.5 million, and is essential to the region’s future economic viability. In April 2016, the Schuylkill River Sojourn won a national Public Outreach Project Award from the American Society for Environmental History Your donation helps us continue to build river advocates.

About the Sojourn
- What is the Sojourn? It is an annual 7-day, 112-mile guided canoe/kayak tour that takes paddlers from Schuylkill Haven to Philadelphia. At lunch and evening stops, the public is invited to programs on local culture, history or the environment. The 2016 sojourn, from June 4-10, will feature programs that celebrate the centennial of the National Park Service.
- Who participates? Each year, about 200 paddlers take all or part of the journey, and many more attend evening programs. Over 3,000 registrants from 25 states and Canada, France and Switzerland have participated since its inception in 1999. Over 100 partners provide meals, programming, financial contributions and other support. The event is widely covered by the media.
