The third ride in the Schuylkill River Trail Bike Tour Series, Pedaling through our National Parks is now over. Check back for information about our next ride in Sept. 2015.

Pedaling through our National Parks was a two-day event incorporating a ride along the Schuylkill River Trail with visits to three national parks. Nearly 100 cyclists participated on one or both days, pedaling about 30 miles per day.

About the Ride The trip began on Saturday Sept. 20 at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, with tours of the beautiful park. Cyclists traveled about 10 miles to the Schuylkill River Heritage Area headquarters in Pottstown for a catered lunch and then continued on to Valley Forge National Historical Park, for a ranger led program that included a musket demonstration. The day ended with a bike/passenger shuttle back to Hopewell. The second day of the ride began at Valley Forge National Historical Park and followed the Schuylkill River Trail to Philadelphia. Cyclists stopped for lunch along the trail at the scenic Schuylkill Banks, where there was a brief program about the Washington Rochambeau National Historic Trail. From there, they rode into Philadelphia to Independence National Historical Park, where they enjoyed a guided tour of Independence Hall. From there they returned back to Valley Forge via bike/passenger shuttle.

The Schuylkill River Trail Bike Tour series features bike rides that uniquely combine cycling and history. By offering these rides, the Schuylkill River Heritage Area introduces people to the Schuylkill River Trail and to the visitor sites that can be accessed from the trail. Thus the rides not only promote the trail and encourage outdoor recreation; they also connect people to the region's history and environment.
